2020 TAF "The Past is a Foreign Country"

The stories of 2 men whose conflict, understanding and friendship is forged in territories and borders of varying topography – sea, land, and outer space.

Combining photographic panels and narrative stories - in the old Japanese kamishibai picture-show style - this work examines the political contexts of East-Asian conflicts since 17th century, with the ocean as the realm of absolute freedom. The stories include epic events, such as the 1969 moon-landing expedition of 3 NASA astronauts and the 2018 summit between North and South Korean leaders.

Jun Yang and Michikazu Matsune, both artists from Vienna but who work across different cultural milieu, poetically bridge the past/present, political/personal, national/individual, and offer a perspective on the pandemic current.
