L.v. Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 symbolizes the height of human civilization. Let us wash away the dust of the past year and welcome in a new chapter.

Symphony No. 9 is one of the most precious gifts Beethoven left behind for the world. It is also a grand masterpiece that inspired numerous composers and musicians. In 1824, ten years after his 8th symphony was completed, Beethoven published this symphony. At that time, he was a 54-year-old man who had already completely lost his hearing in both ears. Beethoven passed away three years later; however, just when he was about to be forgotten by the public, Beethoven wrote masterpiece of his life and cemented his unshakable place in history.

The manuscripts he left behind show a 23-year-old Beethoven already thinking about integrating German poet Schillers' poetry into his music. The famous tune to "Ode an die Freude" already appeared in his manuscripts in 1808. This piece marks the first time vocals are added to the last movement of a symphony, serving as a final conclusion of the former three movements. It candidly showcased the composer's will to spread the common values of peace, love, and faith. This brand new revolution in classical music is the key to Beethoven's immortality. As long as "Ode an die Freude" is sung and heard, Beethoven's name will never be forgotten, shining as one of the brightest stars in classical music.
