Filipino choreographer Eisa Jocson returns to the Festival with Manila Zoo (a work-in- pandemic showing) which continues to critique the Disney ‘empire of happiness’, spotlighting this time the secondary cast of animal characters, for which Filipinos are the favored labour force – highly-skilled, energetic, world-class happiness ‘machines’.

In the Disney world where animals are anthropomorphized and formatted with American values and behavior, lions are kings while monkeys, crickets and fish are sidekicks to humans. With German electronic musician Charlotte Simon and 4 Filipino performers, Jocson explores the intersection of humans and animals, of spectacle, labour and confinement. At which moment does Disney’s empire of happiness turn into a zoo that captures creatures in small enclosures to be observed for ‘educational’ purposes and species preservation?

The Corona pandemic makes these questions more pertinent. Unable to join the Festival in person, the Manila Zoo team invites the public to take a seat in the theatre and meet them in their homes to follow their working process. Together, they explore the politics inscribed in spaces of the theatre, digital, Disney, zoo and the personal - and look for moments where the private/public, the real/virtual, happiness/horror collide.

In her latest work, Jocson confronts the psychosis shared by both humans and animals in isolation. It aims to hijack the Disney system - its animal puppets to perform not ‘set entertainment routines’ but the collective desire for change.

Eisa Jocson, Philippines
Eisa Jocson, born in 1986, is a contemporary choreographer and dancer from the Philippines. Trained as a visual artist, with a background in ballet, she won the title of 2010 Pole Art Champion in Manila. Interested in the transition of this movement practice from red light districts to fitness studios Eisa started to explore Pole dancing as a performative practice resulting in her first performance “Death of Pole Dancer”(2011). The piece renegotiates notions such as voyeurism and restrain, vulnerability and violence, sexuality and power. From pole to macho dancing to hostess work, Eisa investigates since then the labor and representations of the dancing body in the service industry, and exposes identity and gender formation, seduction politics, and Filipino social mobility. She has gained wider international attention with her performance “Macho Dancer” 82013) in which she explores a male movement practice normally performed in Manila in night clubs. As a female dancer embodying this body practice, Eisa moves between gender identities and tackles politics of the gaze. In 2017 she has started a performance-series that is dedicated to affective labor in the entertainment industries like Disneyland. “Princess”, the first performance of the series, was invited to the German Dance Platform 2018 as one of the most remarkable productions of the years 2017 and 2018. Eisa regularly presents her works at acclaimed theaters and international festivals in Asia and Europe, e.g. Tanz im August, TPAM Yokohama, Asia Triennial of Performing Arts, Melbourne, Beursschouwburg Brussels, Zürcher Theater Spektakel, Kuenstlerhaus Mousonturm, and Karnabal Festival Manila. She was recipient of the 2018 Cultural Centre of the Philippines 13 Artists Award and won the Hugo Boss Asia Art Award in 2019.
