劇中人雖僅歷二十餘載歲月，周慧玲卻將時代場景跳格於民國元年「南風」盛行的閩中，及保守壓抑的五O年代台灣；在跨時代、跨地域的特殊氛圍中，陳述這跨越性別的戀人之愛，和超越血緣的天倫之情。

Li Yu, the best-selling Chinese author of his time, creates his highly-stylized manner of writing in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty. Priding himself on pleasure, newness and subtlety, Li Yu startles his readers and audiences by transferring tradition to spectacle.
Katherine Hui-ling Chou, the distinguished playwright and director in Taiwan Modern Theater, appropriates the homosexual love affair invented by Li Yu in the 17th century to represent this unconventional cross-gender spectacle with her very own subtlety and wit in the 21st century.
This is a story manifesting love and relationship in the manner of inversion and displacement within a time span of two decades: the Nanfung fashion (homosexual relationship) that was commonly practiced in Fukien in the early 20th century and the conservative, repressed ambiance which enveloped Taiwan in the 1960s. With Katherine Hui-ling Chou’s unique time-expanding and region-crossing deployment, He is my Wife, He is my Mother stages the scenario of love and relationship that transcends gender and surpasses blood.
