Brahms, admitted Beethoven’s great influence on him, invested 15 years in composing his First Symphony in which the timpani at the opening passage of the first movement is echoing the opening motive in Beethoven’s Symphony No.5, and the theme of the last movement reminiscing of Beethoven’s Symphony No.9, Ode to Joy. Brahms also confessed that he always felt as if he heard Beethoven’s footsteps were after him when composing . That is why this concert is named “Hark, The Giant!”
Austro-German music in the Classical period poses the most formidable challenge for performers. It is with Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 that the now 28-year-old Russian pianist Alex Kobrin won the prestigious Gold Medal at the Twelfth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2005. The joint concert of Maestro Günther Herbig and the rising superstar pianist Kobrin will show the audience the essence of the classical repertoire of Austro-German music.
