Anton Bruckner was inspired by gospel to create compsitions which possess complex polyphony, architectural exactitude and elegance. His works not only put performers to the test but challenge audiences’ tolerance in length, and this is why his Symphony No.8 is rarely performed in Taiwan. Nevertheless, the yearning for a new life and purity in the music show its broadness and touching spirit. Toru Takemitsu was detected lung cancer when his fame was about to spread. He spent his life fighting with the specter of death, and the heaven in his music is always in dull gray, reminding us of his words, “As long as I live I shall choose sound as something to confront a silence. That sound should be a single, strong sound,” and in his dark-sided Requiem. This Heavenly Symphony concert will bring about striking contrasts between hope and resistance as well as praising and shouting.
Günther Herbig’s interpretation of music reminds people of his teacher, Karajan. Originally from the former East Germany, Maestro Herbig is great at presenting musical texture in a solid way, and the exactitude, precision and sharpness of Austro-German music. Under his baton, the polyphonic interaction and solid musical texture will be brought out vividly, which will enlight your musical aspects .
